Gitanjali Aiyar was one of the first English-speaking female news readers in India.
She passed away died on Wednesday, she had just turned was 70.
Parkinson's disease-afflicted award-winning anchor passed out after coming home from a walk, according to people close to the family.
Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971 and won four best anchor awards during that time. In 1989, she further received the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women.
Aiyar, who holds a diploma from the National School of Drama (NSD), not only presents news programming but has also appeared in print advertising and even performed in the TV drama "Khandaan" by Shree Kshirsagar.
She worked with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) throughout her long, famous career.
A number of well-known people expressed their condolences on twitter for the prominent personality's passing.
